Tax officials see the Internet as a potential tax evasion machine. Officials at the U.S. Treasury Department are concerned the Internet may be used by citizens to hide their incomes, while the U.S. Federal Communications Commission officials are ending a tax exemption for Internet users. So far, there's no coordinated government effort to tax economic activities in cyberspace. Instead, each level of government-federal, state and local is exploring a variety of ideas. One early move by the U.S. Congress came with the passage of the telecommunications reform bill. For decades, the government has fought tax evasion and money-laundering by criminals by asking banks to record financial transactions and to report cash deposits of more than $10,000. But the combination of online commerce, data-scrambling technology, electronic cash and international communications could allow the tax-free buying and selling of goods and services via the Internet. Sales-tax evasion is a major concern for state-level tax officials, who derive most of their revenue from such taxes.
