Democracy, at its core, is about people. Somehow during the 20th century, that concept was lost in the translation. The power of democracy shifted, ever so slowly, residing with the elite in Washington D.C. Some will argue democracy was lost because the public let it slip away through a complex calculus fueled by public scandal and factored by apathy, cynicism and hopelessness. Within the next 50 years, people will take back their government and restore democracy to the people. It will not be an easy task. An almost completely inert and ineffectual populace will have to be motivated and moved to action. Old fears and precepts will have to change. The twilight of the 20th century is pock-marked by a citizenry more concerned about their daily health and well-being-about their day-to-day survival-than about where their government leaders are taking the country. Into the 21st century, the technology will tie communities together. Multimedia technologies will be driven to the level of the television, indeed, it may be integrated with the television.
