The article presents a letter from David A. Patterson, the outgoing President of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), concerning the association's future. He suggests areas of growth and operational improvement in order to attract potential members to the association. Patterson suggests doing more to convince ACM conference members to join the association. He suggests that ACM become more involved in the emerging computer science industry in China, India and other developing nations. Patterson would like for more ACM student members to join the association after graduation and for younger leaders to emerge to replace ACM's baby boom generation leadership. Finally, he discusses the need to improve the "Communications of the ACM" in order to increase association membership.
