The article focuses on enlarging the high-performance computational community while educating U.S. students at all levels in basic maths and science. For the past decade, the industrial, business and scientific communities have warned that the U.S. technical infrastructure is at risk due to inadequate educational preparation at every level. Recent efforts to remediate these inadequacies have involved advanced computational and network technology, reflected in intense interest in connecting U.S. students to the Internet. But connecting alone is also inadequate. This national policy commitment is reflected in the U.S. National Science Foundation's Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure (NPACI) program, which mandates that the human and technical resources of its two partnerships, NPACI and the National Computational Science Alliance, focus jointly on education, out-reach and training. NPACI has sought to develop university-level computational science curricula as well as computational tools and methodologies in science and maths curricula in U.S. grade schools.
