The article evaluates the essence of human element and experience retained in personalization, and offers a user-centric model to approach personalization for the Internet or web application. It proposes a six-step user-centered design (UCD) process to be employed for electronic-commerce applications. The first step in UCD involves identifying the target user segments of the experience being designed. Goal and task analysis form next two steps in the process. Task analysis produces a structured pile of requirements and objectives of customers. The following step deals with the elicitation and documentation of user's object model. The fifth step in UCD combines models designed in previous steps into an end-to-end analysis of each potential user experience. The final step involves testing of the system. This step demands great concern regarding the privacy of customers. Taking superior decisions about when to reach the personalization toolbox is significant in building a personalized model that ensures all facades of human element has been induced in the experience.
