Resumen
Events of September 11, 2001 have been a hilarious question mark on the face of national security in the U.S. National security has become the top priority and a major challenge for all governments across the globe. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has responded to the challenge vividly, drawing upon intellectual and technological capabilities of scholars, scientists and technologists. The article highlights key emerging technologies related to several critical areas in the realm of homeland security. Six of mission areas of the Department of Homeland Security include intelligence and warning; border and transportation security; domestic counter-terrorism; protecting critical infrastructure; defending against terrorism; and emergency preparedness and response. First three areas entail measures to prevent terrorist attacks against the U.S., next two on reducing vulnerabilities within the U.S., and the last focuses on minimizing the damage caused and recovering from terrorist attacks.
