Resumen
The article discusses issues concerning the use of information technology (IT) within the federal government. A recent workshop, which was sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation, the Government Information Technology Services Board and the U.S. National Institutes of Health, studied partnership between government agencies and the IT research community has succeeded in the past for the benefit of the nation. The most notable example is the emergence of the Internet as the basis for broad scientific, cultural, civic and commercial discourse, evolving from what was originally a government-supported networking research project. The collaborative development of a new applied research domain is critical to help meet the growing information service demands in the U.S. At the end of this extraordinary century of scientific achievement and technological innovation, the U.S. is poised for a radical shift in the manner in which individuals learn and work, conduct their business and are entertained and informed, arising from the innovation of IT.
