Resumen
As the use of the Internet began to spread through many sectors of Chinese society, the country's leaders had to decide whether to allow this new medium to keep spreading, and methods to control it. Even though technology itself allows decentralized coordination, the leadership chose to implement a hierarchy of responsibility to manage its growth. The article traces the trend of development of the Internet infrastructure in China. Unlike the U.S. where the Internet has evolved without central control, China's Internet development has differed. The government has allowed some competition to develop between domestic Internet service providers. Competition among them results in improved service quality and decreased charges. In the last decade, China's economy has grown rapidly, and telecommunications sector has grown at annual rates of 30%-50%. Information infrastructure has been contributing to economic expansion in countries, which points to a positive correlation between telecommunications infrastructure and economic growth worldwide. Growth in China is not alien to this trend.
