And distributors and recipients of content need ways to fully utilize the rich potential of their digital assets. Traditional content media yield degraded content when copied or require expensive and specialized equipment to produce high-quality copies. The technical burden on traditional content creators, such as book authors, for protecting their material has been minimal. Digital watermarking is the hiding of data within the content's digital representation. Benefits of digital watermarks depend on the particular application and associated and differentiated needs, burdens, and benefits for content creators, distributors, and recipients. For content distributors, the value of digital watermarking depends on the application. Distributors can charge more for authorized original works. The digital revolution that is merging communication and computing provides a new way to add value to legitimate users of content while posing challenges in protection of content from abuse by pirates.
