The article explores challenges involved in getting to the point where a true cornucopia of educational software is available for the children. No one is making serious money selling educational software. The top companies in the educational technology market, such as Scholastic, Davidson, Computer Curriculum, The Learning Co. and Jostens are making a few dollars. Prices are high because costs for developing good educational software are sincere, and demand is low because schools aren't spending their funds on software. If the technology is really going to impact education, software will be the key component. Today's computers equipped with the right software could reach out to all children and genuinely afford them the opportunity to engage deeply and substantively in ideas and collaborations. Schools will spend their textbook dollars on software only when software comes embedded in curriculum packages that are explicitly tied to standards and tests and that provide the range of supports that textbooks inexpensively afford.
