In this article, the author presents a report of the development of electronic books (e-books) in this so-called information age. He describes that the idea behind e-books is to develop a single device with an entire library of interlinked documents, dictionary lookup, unlimited, sharable annotation, search capability and so forth. The author also describes two e-book devices of two different companies. One is the Rocket Ebook (REB) from NuvoMedia and the other is Softbook (SB) from Softbook Press Inc. Both are PC pads with flash RAM storage and backlit, touch-sensitive monochrome screens. The author also focuses on the speedy technological developments and the business considerations for these. Based on his views, he assumes that someday it might happen that a student, who carries a PDA,CD or MP3 music player, cell phone, books, and notebooks in these days, should have to carry only a pocket size e-book having all these applications.
