In this article, the author describes his sufferings when he had to undergo a brain cancer surgery that left him vision impaired. The author, a long-time member of ACM, asks if more communications articles were available online so that he can access them through text-to-speech devices. The author writes about the alternative mechanisms he has developed for dealing with the mountains of text that comes his way in his day-to-day activities. He uses a voice-producing system, the Macintosh SimpleText program. The author mentions a few text-to-speech applications such as Kurzweil Reader, Write, Outloud and Outspoken. Systems developed and intended to support visually impaired users provide effective text-to-speech translation. The author finds it difficult reading long paper documents or articles. The author suggests a machine-readable version of magazines in addition to paper version.
