Resumen
Online data gathering has generated significant concern among Internet users and privacy proponents, including the San Francisco-based Electronic Frontier Foundation, and the Washington-based Electronic Privacy Information Center. Corporate tracking of consumers' online activity invades their privacy, and can reveal sensitive information, such as, visits to sex-related sites or AIDS information pages. These concerns have prompted a rash of consumer complaints, several government studies, some action in the Congress, and increased political pressure on the industry to come up with better privacy protections. Despite all the fuss, and a few token concessions, industry shows no sign of losing its ability to collect and sell data about subscribers' online activities. Industry's political clout was demonstrated late last year when it crushed a draft bill promoted by Dianne Feinstein. The bill was intended to prevent companies from collecting data from children, who gave the information when signing up to play online games at child-oriented Web sites.
