The article reports that Web users generally rely on a link anchor's content or embedded URL to convey the purpose and target of a link. Many complain they often do not know where a link will take them. Considering what can be found inside a link could lead to a solution, such as incorporating link attributes like semantic link types and link keywords. Link attributes provide the user with a way of knowing or previewing the target before activating the link. Link types help authors organize information more effectively, furnish a context for readers, and indicate equivalences. Link types may be extended with keywords. Hypertext navigation through specialized views, guided tours, and link attribute queries may be implemented on top of rich links. Rich links, as well as enhancements for other links, fundamentally complement basic navigation, and become invaluable in complex, knowledge- intensive domains that emphasize teamwork such as collaborative design.
