Resumen
The financial services industry and the ICT trends have led to information systems that are unavoidably more exposed to attacks. Four emerging trends in security threats - and possible defenses - are listed: 1. shift from generic attacks to more sophisticated and well targeted attacks; a better solution than username/password combinations is to use separate hardware tokens, 2. propagation speed and volume of virus attacks; financial institutions should have intrusion-detection systems in place and have computer emergency and response teams to repress attacks, 3. increasing speed of the release of new viruses and attacks; for the detection of viruses, scanning based on signatures is no longer sufficient. Heuristic scanners could possibly provide better protection, although they have not fulfilled their potential, and 4. increase in identity fraud; organizations must improve the identity checks, including using electronic identification and authentication provided by the government.
