Many
software developmentprofessionalsandmanagersaren'tfullyconvincedthatprogramstoraisetheirorganizations' CMM levelwillprovide a goodreturnoninvestment. Unfortunately, becauseofthescatterednatureofpublishedresearchonthistopic,
theresultshaven'tbeenconclusive.
Aninvestigationof CMM leveltransitionsforsevencommonperformancemetrics (including ROI) analyzed a databaseof more than 400 projectsfrom 19 informationsources. Eachdatabase record was a normalized "after-before ratio," whichsignifiesimprovementfor a givenmetricandisindependentfromthestudiedorganization'smeasurementmethods. Thisanalysisfoundthat CMM programinvestmentsimprovedperformanceconsistentlyforallsevenmetrics,
despitethewiderangeoforganizationsand software developmentpractices. A statisticalanalysissupportsthesefindings.
